To ask sociology to be useful for something is always a way of asking is to be useful to those in power - whereas the scientific function of sociology is to understand the social world, starting with the structures of power. This operation cannot be socially neutral, and undubtedly fulfills a social function. One reason for that all power of its efficacy - not the least important part - to misrecognition of the mechanisms on which is based.
